The Ferndale Wildcats continued their impressive start to the new softball season with a doubleheader sweep at Hayfork on Tuesday.
The Jacks shut out the Timberjacks in both games, winning each by identical 22-0 scores and improving to 4-0.
And while head coach Jeremy Griffith is getting contributions form throughout his roster, junior Olivia Gossi has been particularly impressive early in the new campaign.
Gossi threw a three-inning perfect game in the opener on Tuesday and pitched a five-inning no-hitter in game two.
Game one was scheduled for five innings but ended after three on the 10-run rule, as did game two after five innings.
Gossi gave up no hits and no walks and struck out three in game one, throwing just 29 pitches over the three innings, and she would walk just two batters and strike out 10 in game two.
“Olivia was obviously sharp in the circle for us,” Griffith said. “She just continued to be able to mix her pitches up and keep batters off balance.”
Gossi got plenty of offensive support in both games, most notably from her older sister Madison Gossi.
The hard-hitting senior hit two home runs in game one, including a grand slam, finishing 2-for-3 with five RBIs and four runs.
Freshman Abagail Gossi rounded out a good opening game for the three Gossi sisters by going 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Makenzie Chambers also impressed at the plate in that win, finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Olivia Gossi (1-for-2, three RBIs, three runs), Tinnley Pidgeon (1-for-2, RBI, three runs) and Quinn Stokesberry (1-for-2, two RBIs) each also made some noise at the plate.
Five Ferndale players finished with multiple hits in the game-two victory, including Abagail Gossi, who led the way and finished 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs.
Fallon Bullan also hit an inside-the-park home run and was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while Olivia Gossi capped a big all-around day for herself by going 2-for-2 with two more RBIs.
“It was a good day,” Griffith said. “I thought that we swung the bats well.”
Madison Gossi (2-for-4, two RBIs), Tinnley Pidgeon (2-for-4, three RBIs), Chambers (2-for-4, four RBIs) and Stokesberry (1-for-2, two RBIs) each also hit successfully in game two.
The Wildcats also impressed on defense and did not allow any errors on the day.
The Cats will have a break in action until Thursday of next week, when they travel to play Arcata.
