College of the Redwoods won its home opener in baseball over the weekend, but would drop two more games to Hartnell to close out a three-game series against the Panthers.
Playing at Bomber Field in Eureka, the two teams opened the series on Friday with the hosts taking a 6-5 victory on a walk-off.
They played two more games on Saturday, with Hartnell winning 14-2 in seven innings and 8-4.
With the two losses, CR dropped to 1-5.
“Very solid effort in games one and three,” CR head coach John Downey said. “A fantastic effort against a great team.”
In game one, CR rallied with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score at 5-5, before Tristen Valenzuela singled to score Finn Warner for the walk-off winning run an inning later.
Team ace Drew Franklin pitched seven solid innings for a no-decision, with Christian Trebbe getting the win in relief.
Franklin gave up four runs on nine hits, while walking none and striking out two.
Trebbe threw 1.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks and striking out one.
Among the offensive highlights for CR, David MacDonald and Ryan Naillon each finished 2-for-4, while Addisson Guber hit a game-tying double in the eighth.
Game two was a disappointing one for the hosts, with Hartnell scoring runs in each of the first five innings to open up a commanding 10-0 lead.
Evan Fraser got the start on the hill and took the loss, while Kamole Gilliland drove in CR’s only two runs of the game on a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Game three was an exciting affair with the two teams tied 4-4 going into the eighth, before the visitors scored four late runs for the win.
Valenzuela got the start on the hill and threw 5.2 strong innings for a no-decision.
He gave up two earned runs on just two hits and six walks while striking out eight.
Gilliland led the way at the plate for CR and finished 3-for-5, while MacDonald drove in two runs and Tyson Bragg drove in one on a 1-for-2 performance.
“Tons to grow from and a lot to look forward to as the young season moves forward,” Downey said.
Next up, Redwoods will host Ohlone in a three-game series at Bomber Field on Thursday and Friday.
The action gets under with a single game on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Friday’s doubleheader gets under way at 1 p.m.
