Saturday was another wild and busy day of local basketball action with several H-DNL boys and girls teams playing.
And it was a good day for many of them, none more so than the Ferndale girls and the St. Bernard’s boys.
The Wildcats were in action at the Trinity Holiday Classic in Weaverville and took home the tournament championship with a come-from-behind 69-61 win over the host school.
The St. Bernard’s boys also won their tournament championship, getting the better of H-DNL rival McKinleyville with a statement 63-46 victory in the championship game.
Also in boys action on Saturday, at the Arcata tournament, the host Tigers lost in the championship game, falling 66-55 to South Medford, while Del Norte closed out strong with an 81-48 win over Red Bluff, Eureka won a hard-fought battle with Fortuna by a score of 60-48, and Del Norte defeated Red Bluff 81-48.
In girls action, Eureka won their final game at the Windsor tournament and closed out tournament play 2-1 with a 57-34 win over Encinal, while Fortuna defeated Healdsburg 67-21 at the Redwood Empire Invitational in Healdsburg, and St. Bernard’s fell 56-44 to Pyramid Lake in the Mt. Shasta tournament championship game.

The team defense set the tone as the Huskies closed out the Healdsburg tournament with a dominating win over the host school.
It was the Fortuna girls second win in three tournament games as they improved to 6-2 on the season.
“Our defense was outstanding in this game, leading to a number of turnovers and easy buckets,” Fortuna head coach Tom Chapman said.
Seniors Jaydyn Dalton and Taylor Heussler set the tone defensively from the opening tip, while a trio of Fortuna players all impressed with their rebounding.
“I thought our post play was exceptional with Evalynn Little, Olivia Powell and Olivia Scilacci dominating the boards,” Chapman said.
Freshman Kaleya Parkinson also impressed and finished with a team-high 21 points, while Macee Marquez added 13 points and Scilacci chipped in 11 points.
Marquez was named to the all-tournament team after a big three days in Healdsburg.
“Macee and Kaleya both shot the ball well tonight,” Chapman added.
Next up, the Fortuna girls will play at the Red Bluff Holiday Classic, which tips off on Thursday.

The St. Bernard’s girls placed second in tournament play for the second straight week, this time at the Mt. Shasta tournament.
This was a repeat of last year’s Mt. Shasta tournament final, with the three-time defending Nevada state champs getting some revenge for the loss they suffered at the hands of the Crusaders a year ago.
CJ Figas scored a team-high 20 points for St. Bernard’s which dropped to 4-3.
Figas was named to the all-tournament team after three good days in tournament action.
Samantha Sundberg added nine points for SB, while Carli Baum and Leah Stevens each chipped in seven points.
Next up, the SB girls will play at the Kelseyville tournament, which begins on Thursday.
