The South Fork Cubs are building some momentum on the football field.
On Friday night, for the second time in three weeks, the Cubs rallied from a halftime deficit on their way to victory on Homecoming night in Miranda, this time beating Potter Valley 24-20.
The win was the third straight for the 4-1 Cubs, and their only loss of the season so far came against a Hayfork team that has not lost a game in well over two years.
The win also lifted them to 2-0 in the NCL III and into second place in the standings, just one win behind Tomales (3-0).
“The big thing from last night is our offensive line and defensive line really grew up,” South Fork head coach Brandon Coborn said. “They did a great job in the second half.”
The Cubs outscored the Bearcats 16-6 over the final two quarters.
Martin Navarrete had a huge game in the win, scoring three of the Cubs’ four touchdowns, including two TD receptions and one TD run.
John Stafslien also impressed and added a TD run as well as a fumble recovery.
Quarterback Shawn Schmidt also was instrumental in the win as he continues to grow into his role as a team leader.
“Shawn Schmidt is really gaining his voice for our team,” Coborn said. “At halftime he had a lot to say. Week by week he’s growing as our leader.”
The Cubs defense came up with big stands at the end of either half, giving the team some momentum going into the break and then helping to secure the win at the end of the fourth quarter just as the visitors were threatening.
The South Fork lines were anchored by sophomores Lukas Edwards and Dorje Johnson and freshman Koda Walls, all of whom are showing a lot of promise early their careers..
Another sophomore, Kael Puno, showcased his versatility and importance to the team with a big performance at multiple different positions.
“Our utility guy, Kael Puno, had a really good game for us,” Coborn said of the sophomore, who saw time at tight end, lineman and wide receiver.
Yet another sophomore, Drake LeBrink, also had a good night after transferring from Fortuna this past offseason.
“He played a lot for us last night,” Coborn said. “It was great to see him get on the field.”
Next up, the Cubs will travel to Tomales for a key league showdown next Friday.
