Darron Dodd had a monster day for College of the Redwoods on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to secure a first win of the season.
The local community college team traveled to Rocklin to play Sierra College and lost a high-scoring showdown, 57-34.
The loss drops CR to 0-6 on the season and 0-1 in the National NorCal Conference.
Dodd, however, turned in the best performance from a CR receiver that we’ve seen since the program was reinstated four years ago and finished with 207 yards receiving on just seven catches.
The redshirt freshman from Chandler, Arizona, also scored three touchdowns as Redwoods posted a season-high in points.
Unfortunately, the CR defense also gave up a season-high in points and trailed by multiple scores for much of the afternoon.
“We gave up 57 points and had no turnovers, so we’ve got some work to do at this point,” CR head coach Jason White said. “We’ve got to go and watch some film and figure out how to get better.”
CR finished the game with 369 yards net passing and 101 on the ground, and scored five touchdowns.
But the CR defense was unable to stop the home team, which also put up a season-high in points.
Sierra trailed early in the game, but scored TDs in all four quarters, including 36 points in the opening half, and the Wolverines led 36-13 at the break.
Dodd pulled in TD catches of 48, 46 and 12 yards from quarterback Devon Forehand for his team’s first three touchdowns of the afternoon.
Forehand also threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Justice Anthony and had a productive day despite the loss.
The CR quarterback completed 17 of 32 passes for 333 yards, the four TDs and one interception.
He was replaced late in the game by Bryton Livingston, who added a nine-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
Forehand, who has shown some promise, will continue to start under center.
“He’s our starting quarterback and we’re going to go with that right now,” White said. “He played pretty well and he’s being athletic. It’s going to pay dividends in the long run.”
The Redwoods ground attack struggled to make much of an impact and gained just 3.3 yards a carry, with Forehand leading the way and finishing with a team-high 35 yards on nine carries.
The visitors had an opportunity to go into halftime just nine points adrift, but after driving all the way to the Sierra one-yard line they were unable to punch it in, and the home team would then quickly drive the length of the field and score a fifth TD of the half.
“That was a big difference in the game,” White said.
With the win, which ended a two-game skid, Sierra improved to 1-0 in conference and 2-4 on the season.
Next up, CR travels to play Shasta next Saturday with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
