Daylin Brown has been one of the bright spots for the Humboldt Smoke Fastpitch 18Us in Oregon this week, but it’s been a disappointing couple of days for the team bats.

The newly-formed local softball travel team features players from all around the county and is in action at the NorthWest Fastpitch Alliance Tournament in Medford, with many of the players reuniting this summer after playing together on the Mad River MIST 14Us four years ago.

However, it’s been a tough start to the weekend for the Smoke players, who are 0-4 in tournament play.

“Our bats haven’t shown up yet,” head coach Joe Brown said. “We’re not coming through with clutch hits.”

Brown, however, has been one of the bright spots for the team and the soon-to-be Eureka High sophomore has been playing well.

The young standout is hitting over .300 over the first four games and making her presence felt at the plate.

And that’s not all.

Brown saw some action in the pitcher’s circle on Friday and delivered with a strong performance in a loss to the Southern Oregon Blackout.

The local club trailed by five after the opening inning, but Brown came in and held an impressive Blackout lineup that has won over 20 games this summer scoreless for the remainder of the game.

“She came in and she pitched well,” Joe Brown said. “She shut them down the rest of the way.”

Some of her teammates have also impressed despite the four losses.

Big 5 MVP and Humboldt Sports Softball Player of the Year McKennah Sargent has led the team at the plate and is batting over .500 in tournament play, while Eureka’s Lola Distefano and Fortuna’s Isabel Sanchez have also had some big moments for the team.

Sanchez has made her presence felt both at the plate and in the circle, with an on-base percentage of over .400.

“She’s getting on base, we just can’t get her around,” Joe Brown said. “We’re not hitting together.”

Sanchez has also pitched in two of the team’s games, striking out nine in three innings work on Thursday and adding five more strikeouts in two innings on Friday.

The Humboldt Smoke will be back in action on Saturday, as they begin the tournament double-elimination playoffs.

They’ll take the field at 9 a.m.
