The Northern Humboldt Giants got the 2025 summer American Legion baseball season off to an impressive start over the weekend.
The local club traveled to Sutter for a wood bat round robin event and won all four games over two days.
The Giants opened with an 8-0 win over the Chico Suns, and followed that with victories over the Tehama Bulls (14-3), Roseville (6-1) and the Orland Outlaws (3-1).
And they did it with just nine of their 15 players available.
McKinleyville’s Hunter Carper returned to action with a bang after missing the latter stages of the high school season through injury.
The hard-hitting Carper finished 3-for-3 with a home run in the opening game, while teammate Jake Brunner also impressed and was 3-for-4 with a double.
Landon Williams and Dominic Miller each added two hits in the win, while Rhythm Green and Hunter Matson each also had a base hit.
Williams, Green, Blake Santos and Bode Reininger combined on the mound for the shutout and allowed just four hits while striking out 11.
Reininger continued to impress in game two against the Bulls and led a balanced performance at the plate that saw seven of the nine Giants players have at least one hit.
Reininger finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Bowdy Hicks and Matson each had a double.
Brunner, Miller, Williams and Carper each also had a hit, with Reininger, Hicks, Matson and Brunner combining on the hill to throw a one-hitter.
The Giants pitchers threw another one-hitter against the Roseville team on Sunday, with Green, Williams and Santos seeing time on the mound.
The Giants managed just three hits — one each by Green, Santos and Hicks — but made them count.
In the final game of the weekend against the Outlaws, Carper closed out the weekend in much the same way he began it, going 3-for-4 with another home run.
Hicks also made some noise at the plate and was 3-for-3, with Matson, Santos and Brunner each also getting a hit.
Reininger pitched a complete game for the win on the hill, allowing just four hits and striking out eight.
Next up, the Giants will host a doubleheader against a team from Phoenix, Ore., at McKinleyville High School on Saturday, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
