It was a great start to the new season for the Humboldt Crabs over the weekend, and a great start to the new season for local players and fans.
A crowd of 1,255 showed up on opening night, as the Crabs opened a three-game weekend series against the Novato Knicks with a 4-3 victory.
They also won 4-3 in game two of the series on Saturday night, before closing out the weekend with a dominating 17-7 on Sunday afternoon.
And several local players played big roles in the series sweep, most notably Keenan Morris and Cayden Lee.
Morris, a Eureka High graduate, led the team at the plate on Sunday and finished 4-for-6 with three RBIs, while former St. Bernard’s Crusader Lee finished 3-for-6 with a home run, a double and three RBIs.
Another former Eureka Logger, Parker Rodgers, also had a big say at the plate on Sunday as he began his second summer with the team.
Rodgers, who hit successfully in all three of the weekend games, was 1-for-3 with three walks and scored three runs.
He also had two hits in Saturday’s win, as did Lee, as the Crabs won that game on a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth.
In game one of the series, another former Logger, Myles Standish, got his second season with the local collegiate summer team off to a good start on the mound.
The 2023 Eureka graduate got the start and threw five strong innings for a no-decision.
Standish gave up just three hits and two walks and struck out six.
But the local contingent were not the only Crabs players to impress on opening weekend.
Cameron Sewell had a huge opening weekend, finishing 5-for-9 over the three games and hitting a double in each, while Nolan Hamilton was 6-for-13.
Hamilton was born in Humboldt County but has spent much of his life in Arizona.
The Crabs will try to keep their fast start to the new season going when they host local American Legion club the Humboldt Eagles at the Arcata Ball Park on Wednesday night.
First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
