Cal Poly Humboldt freshman Michael Payan enjoyed a huge day at the NCAA national track and field championships on Thursday.
Competing in the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl in Colorado, the outstanding freshman broke his own school record twice on his way to placing fifth in the men’s pole vault.
The Rocklin native cleared 5.32 meters (17 feet, 5.5 inches).
Ranked No. 7 entering the meet, the first-year standout rose to the occasion and secured a spot on the podium and First-Team All-American honors, which go to the top eight in the country.
Payan’s ascent through the collegiate ranks has been nothing short of remarkable this spring.
He first broke the school record earlier in the season and now leaves his freshman campaign not only as the best pole vaulter in Cal Poly Humboldt history, but as one of the best in the nation.
Payan becomes Humboldt’s first freshman outdoor track and field First-Team All-American since 2017.
