Former H-DNL athletes earn all-state honors at JC championships

Former South Fork Cub Chase McFarland was one of three local athletes to earn all-state honors at this weekend’s JUCO state track and field championships in San Mateo

McFarland placed fifth in the women’s hammer throw with a throw of 41.90 meters.

The 2023 South Fork High graduate, who has enjoyed a stellar career during her time at CR, was one of three Redwoods athletes to compete at the prestigious weekend meet, along with Violet Cayton and Anna Grimmett.

Former Eureka Logger Emily Pesch also was in action at the big meet representing San Diego Mesa College and earned all-state recognition in two different events this week, including the heptathlon.

The 2024 Eureka graduate qualified for the state meet after placing third in the heptathlon at the SoCal championships last month.

This week, she scored 3721 points to place eighth in the event, just 20 points out of a top-six finish.

Pesch rounded out a big week at the state championships by also placing fifth in the high jump with a jump of 5′ 1″, earning all-state honors in that event as well.

The top eight in each event receive all-state recognition.

McFarland;’s CR teammate, Violet Cayton, also earned all-state honors for the local community college program in the women’s javelin.

She placed seventh with a throw of 33.16m.

Both McFarland and Cayton exceeded expectations.

“They killed it,” CR head coach Reed Elmore said of the CR all-state duo. “They both placed five places higher than they were ranked.

“It was a good day for Redwoods. All of the coaches are super proud of how all our athletes performed.”

Another former Eureka Logger also impressed at the state championships, with Anna Grimmett placing 12th in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

The CR sophomore crossed the finish line in a time of 12 minutes, 33.99 seconds in windy conditions.

CR’s Houston Klug also qualified for the state championships in the men’s high jump after placing sixth at the recent NorCal championships, but he was unable to make the trip due to a knee injury.
