Explosive Hanks, Florvilus lead H-DNL charge in NCS meets

The Humboldt-Del Norte League had six individual wins in two North Coast Section meets on Saturday, including two each for Del Norte’s Deken Hanks and St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus.

It was another record-setting day for the Del Norte junior, who was competing at the Redwood Empire championships at Fortuna High School.

Just one week after the speedster broke his own H-DNL record in the boys 100 meters, he did it again, crossing the finish line in a time of 10.57 seconds and knocking 0.13 off his previous record. Check out video highlights of the record-breaking run above.

Hanks’ time in the event is the third fastest in the entire NCS this season, with De La Salle junior Jaden Jefferson’s mark of 10.39 leading the way.

Hanks also placed first in the 200m, setting a new PR with a time of 21.91.

Florvilus, meanwhile, was competing at the NCS Class A (smaller schools) meet at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa and won both the high jump and the 100m hurdles.

She posted a jump of 5’ 2” in the high jump and finished the hurdles race in a time of 14.98 seconds.

Florvilus also finished ninth in the girls 100m.

Her St. Bernard’s teammate Kohlton Hall placed first in the Class A boys discus, leading a dominating day for the Little 4 schools in the event.

Hall’s throw of 132 feet was almost six feet better than the field, with Ferndale’s Ethan Weitzel in second, followed by Hoopa’s Quincy McDonald in third, St. Bernard’s Asher Floyd in fourth and Ferndale’s Angel Zaragoza in fifth.

The top three in each event at the Class A meet qualify for next week’s big NCS Meet of Champions.

The impressive Kasso rounded out a good day with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump.
