The Arcata girls continued to showcase their depth in track and field with a third straight team win in an H-DNL meet at Del Norte on Tuesday.
The Arcata girls won eight of the 16 events and scored 175.5 points to out-distance the field by 40 points.
Sophomore Bella DeCarli led the way once again and placed first in three events for the second straight week, as she continues to build momentum ahead of next week’s league championships, which will be held at Fortuna.
DeCarli, who was one of four league girls to win multiple events on the day, placed first in the 800 meters and the 300m hurdles, as well as teaming with Savannah Leary, Lilah Durham and Ada Kinziger to win the 4x100m relay.
Kinziger also is enjoying a good spring with the Tigers and won two events for the fourth straight league meet.
In addition to the relay win, the talented sophomore also placed first in the 400m, finishing in a time of 1 minute, 1.64 seconds and edging Eureka’s Grecia Ortiz by less than a second.
St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus also won multiple events for the fourth straight league meet as she continues to build momentum towards the North Coast Section postseason.
The senior, who will compete in track and field and basketball at Chico State after graduation this year, took first in both the 100m hurdles and the high jump.
Florvilus had a season-best time of 15.20 seconds in the hurdles race, which is the fifth fastest time in the event in the NCS this spring.
She cleared 5’ 2” to win the high jump, and her season-best mark of 5’ 4”, which she set in early April at the Brookings Rotary Invitational, is also the fifth best mark in the NCS this season.
Two other H-DNL girls also are riding high in the NCS rankings.
Eureka senior Isabella Claussen has the fifth best mark in the shot put with a throw of 36’ 2”, which she set at the first league meet of the spring, while Arcata junior Anna McLaughlin has the eighth best mark in the section in the long jump (17’ 8”), which she also set at the big Brookings meet.
Claussen and McLaughlin both continued to impress at Del Norte on Tuesday.
The Eureka standout placed first in the shot put for the fourth straight league meet, comfortably out-distancing the field once again, while McLaughlin won the triple jump and placed second in the long jump.
Fortuna sophomore Addison Burgess beat McLaughlin for the win in the long jump with an impressive mark of 15’ 8”.
Ortiz was the fourth individual to win multiple events on the day, setting a PR of 27 seconds on her way to victory in the 200m and teaming with Aurora Copeland, Evelyn Ladika and Elizabeth Rominger to win the 4×100 relay.
Del Norte’s Jeana Erler also enjoyed another good day of competition.
The impressive junior set a PR of 13.13 seconds on her way to winning the 100m and also was second in both the 200m and the high jump.
Fortuna’s Madison Ruiz also set a PR of 13.31 seconds to place second in the 100m, with St. Bernard’s Alyssa Boham third.
Ruiz also placed third in both the 200m and 400m.
The Del Norte girls placed second as a team with 135.5 points, followed by Eureka (103), Fortuna (75) and St. Bernard’s (56).
The Crusaders had three winners on the day.
In addition to the two victories for Florvilus, sophomore Natalie McLaughlin won the discus.
Other winners for Arcata included sophomore Sonya Chisholm, who set a PR of 5:56.61 on her way to winning the 1600m, as well as freshman Sylvie Hunter, who won the 3200m.
