Smokey on fire as Cal Poly Humboldt bats light up the CCAA

Cal Poly Humboldt Athletics – Alyssa Smokey in action for the Jacks.

With senior Alyssa Smokey setting the tone, offense has not been a problem for the Cal Poly Humboldt softball team this year.

As they get set for a doubleheader against Cal State East Bay at the Bear River Sports Complex on Saturday, Smokey and the Jacks lead the California Collegiate Athletic Association in most offensive categories.

As a team, the CPH women lead the conference in batting average (.328), runs scored (162), hits (264), RBIs (153), slugging percentage (.460) and walks (85) and are second in doubles with 56.

And Smokey is a big reason for that.

The senior leads the conference in batting with a remarkable .513 average, which is well ahead of the next best batter, San Marcos’ Jillian Albayati (.449).

The Nevada native, who is enjoying a season for the ages, also leads the conference in slugging percentage (.803), on base percentage (0.635), RBIs (33) and hit by pitches (14).

She also is tied for the conference lead in doubles (10) and is tied for second most walks (13) and third most home runs with four.

And Smokey has been consistent, hitting successfully in all but seven of her 31 games.

Remarkably, she also has been one of her team’s moist effective pitchers.

The senior has appeared in the circle in 16 games and has a record of 5-5 with an ERA of .516 with 44 strikeouts in 59.1 innings.

Teammate Shelby Shanks also features among the conference leaders on offense.

The junior from Stockton is batting .387, which is tied for seventh best in the CCAA.

As a team, the Jacks are scoring an impressive 5.6 runs a game.

All of that, however, hasn’t necessarily translated into team success, although the Jacks remain well  in contention in the conference standings.

Humboldt is 19-12 overall and 8-8 in the CCAA and sits in a three-way tie for fourth in the standings, along with Chico State and CS San Bernardino.

The Jacks have given up more runs than any other conference team (126) at average of 4.3 a game, and they have the third worst team ERA in the CCAA (3.23) out of 10 schools.

Saturday’s doubleheader is set to begin at 11 a.m.
