The Cal Poly Humboldt track and field team traveled to compete at the weekend Riverfront Invitational in Spokane, Wash.
And three former H-DNL athletes impressed at the indoor event, including a couple of standout throwers.
Former Eureka Logger Joseph Gonzalez posted a new career best mark in the shot put.
The 2023 Eureka High graduate placed eighth out of 32 competitors in the event with a throw of 51’ 7.25”.
The field included mostly Division-1 athletes among the 35 schools competing.
Gonzalez came into the day ranked 18th among the 32 throwers in the event, but advanced to the finals in a very competitive field.
Former McKinleyville Panther Derek Ray also was in action in the men’s shot put.
The 2023 Mack High graduate also had a strong performance with a mark of 48’8.75’’.
Another former Eureka Logger, Ginny Brooks, also impressed for the CPH women’s team.
Brooks, who was a seven-time H-DNL champion, fell just short of her personal best in the 60 meter hurdles.
The local standout clocked 9.49 seconds in the event.
The Jacks will conclude their indoor season at this week’s Grand Valley State University meet in Allendale, Michigan.
