Redwoods baseball falls to high-flying conference leaders

College of the Redwoods Athletics

A trip to play the runaway conference leaders was never going to be easy for a College of the Redwoods baseball team that has struggled this season.

On Friday, Redwoods traveled to Quincy to play Feather River and dropped both games of a doubleheader, falling 9-0 and 16-6.

With the two losses, CR dropped to 2-17 in the Golden Valley Conference and 4-28 overall, while the high-flying Golden Eagles improved to 18-1 and 26-8.

A former H-DNL standout helped secure the doubleheader sweep for the home team as he continue to impress in his first year at Feather River.

McKinleyville’s Bryce Sargent finished 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs in a high-scoring game two.

For the season, the 2025 Mack High graduate, who plays shortstop, is averaging .262 with two home runs and 19 RBIs for one of the best teams in Northern California.

It was, however, another disappointing day for a CR team that has been unable to build much momentum this year.

But there were some bright spots, most notably in game two, including the play of former Eureka Logger Robert Williams, who hit successfully in both games.

After going 1-for-4 in the opening game, the freshman outfielder finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs in the game-two loss and was one of three CR players with multiple hits.

Xavier La Pena was 3-for-3 and Javier Mesa finished 3-for-4.

“Saw some fight against a top team in the state, but ultimately really saw some great individual performances,” CR head coach John Downey said. “Javier, Xavier and Robert all really led the way offensively.”

The Golden Eagles, however, have six more conference wins than any other GVC team for a reason.

“Huge props to Feather River,” Downey said. “They do everything extremely well and beat us in all facets.”

Mesa and Carson Fleming each went 1-for-3 for CR in game one, while McKinleyville’s Tyson Bragg finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs in game two.

With six games remaining in the season, Downey is looking to see this players continue to fight the remainder of the way as they look to close out strong after a disappointing spring so far.

“As we wind down the rest of the way, I’m looking forward to seeing who really steps up,” the CR coach said. “I’m excited to see our sophomores finish strong and look at the core of guys coming back and see them finish their freshman campaign on a high note.”

Redwoods will continue conference play at Shasta with games on Friday and Saturday, before hosting Siskiyous and Butte in doubleheaders over the following two weekends.
