Several Hoopa Warrior wrestlers continued to shine at the weekend North Coast Classic at Eureka High, including two who were named tournament outstanding wrestlers.
Antonio Correa, who is expected to challenge for a North Coast Section title this season, took first place at 215 pounds and was named Outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler for the boys, while teammate Pamela Houston placed first for the Hoopa girls at 120 and was named the tournament Most Outstanding Lower Weight Wrestler.
Houston, who is enjoying an outstanding season on the mats and also will be expected to challenge for a league and NCS championship this winter, overwhelmed the competition and won all four of her matches, including two by pin and two by technical fall.
Correa, who is ranked No. 3 in the section in his weight class and No. 21 in the state, also won all four of his matches in tournament action, all of them by pin.
He won his final against Ely Bowles of Willits in just 58 seconds.
The Warriors, however, traveled with just a handful of wrestlers as sickness has taken its toll on the roster over the past week.
A scheduled league dual meet at Arcata this week had to be postponed and will now take place on Jan. 29.
Most of the Hoopa wrestlers who did travel to Eureka impressed, including freshman Andee Lewis, who placed first in the girls 105 bracket.
“They all did well,” Hoopa boys head coach Robert Baldy said. “They wrestled hard. It was good for them to get some mat time.”
In addition to Houston and Lewis, four other Hoopa girls made the trip, including Morgan Gomez, who competed in her first tournament of the season and acquitted herself well, according to Baldy.
Allison Mace, Audrina Mace and Aryana Mack-Drake each also competed for the Hoopa girls.

Hoopa’s Antonio Correa placed first at 215 pounds at the North Coast Classic.

Hoopa’s Antonio Correa, left, and McKinleyville’s Damarius Thompson were named tournament Most Outstanding Wrestlers at Eureka over the weekend.
In addition to Correa’s big performance, teammate Raymond Baldy also placed second for the Hoopa boys at 190 despite wrestling up a weight class for the tournament, and Riley Baldy finished fourth at 132.
Standout Donald Hostler also made the trip but had to forfeit because of sickness.
“He would have made it to the final without a doubt,” Robert Baldy said of the standout junior, who is ranked No. 5 in the NCS in his weight class.
Larry Begaye (165) and Lyndon Byrd (215) each also made the trip and both wrestled well, according to their coach.
The Warriors will have a break in tournament action this weekend, before traveling for a dual meet at Del Norte next week and then competing at the Maria Carrillo tournament the following weekend.
“Hopefully we can get some of our kids back and we can give Del Norte a good fight,” Robert Baldy said.

Hoopa freshman Andee Lewis placed first in her weight class at Eureka.
