A young South Fork girls soccer team that features no seniors is getting an early boost from some talented new freshmen early in the new season.
On Wednesday evening, the Cubs played their second game of the year, tying Willits 0-0 in Miranda.
Junior Aurora Galaz made posted the clean sheet between the posts and got plenty of help from her young teammates.
Three freshmen are starting for the Cubs this season, including Kendall Kercher, Kamea Hawkins and Calleigh Smith, and all three have impressed head coach Ann Constantino with their early-season performances.
Hawkins helped anchor the Cubs defense.
“She’s very calm at the back and has great touch,” Constantino said of the starting sweeper. “It’s like she was born to play that position.”
Returning junior and defensive midfielder Aubrey Young also impressed for South Fork, as did the ever-consistent Molly Perkins.
“Molly Perkins is always one of our strongest defenders,” Constantino said of the junior.
The Cubs have been progressing through the preseason and look set to make some noise in this year’s Little 4.
“It’s a really close-knit group, and I think that’s going to help,” the longtime head coach said. “They’re very cohesive socially, and they really showed tonight that they’re a team. They used each other and they found each other.”
Last week, the Cubs kicked off the season with a 3-0 loss at Mendocino in a game that got away from them late with the home team scoring two goals in the final few minutes.
Galaz made nine saves in the loss.
“We took that as a learning opportunity,” Constantino said.
Next up, the Cubs will have a rematch against the Wolverines at Willits next Wednesday.
