It was a good start to the Humboldt Eagles American Legion baseball tournament for some of the local teams on Thursday.
The four-day tournament features 19U and 17U brackets, with games being played at Belotti Field across form the Redwood Acres and at the Redwood Fields in Cutten.
In the 19U bracket, Wild Cactus Baseball got the better of the Colts B team by a score of 10-5.
Garrett Shanahan had a big performance on the mound on his way to the victory.
The St. Bernard’s standout threw six innings and allowed just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four.
Tyler Hinrichs pitched one inning in relief, giving up four runs on two hits and two walks and striking out two.
Cayden Lee and Caden Vance led the way for Wild Cactus at the plate.
Lee finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while Vance provided the offensive highlight of the game with a home run and was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Daniel Osborne Jr. and Hinrichs each also made some noise at the plate in the win.
Osborne Jr. was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Hinrichs finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
“It was a strong opening game for our ball club,” head coach Matt Tomlin said.
A pair of eighth graders also enjoyed strong tournament openers for Wild Cactus.
Kaiwi Sharp and Jackson Sharp each added a base hit in the win with the latter also driving in a run.


“The two young players have had a great summer playing against older competition,” Tomlin added.
Wild Cactus will be back in action on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. when they face off against the Southern Humboldt 76ers.
In the 17U bracket, meanwhile, the Northern Humboldt Giants also got the tournament off to a winning start with a 7-1 victory over the Colts at the Redwood Fields in Cutten.
The impressive Bode Reininger pitched a complete game for the win on the hill, giving up just one run on six hits and striking out seven.
Cole Zeller led the Giants at the plate and was 2-for-2 with a double, while Reininger helped his own cause by going 1-for-3 with a double.
Ben Lukens, Tanner Kees and Joe Tanno each also had a base hit for the Giants.
The Giants also won a non-tournament game against the Colts on Wednesday night by a score of 14-2.
Lukens led the team’s offense and was 3-for-5 with a triple in that win, while Zeller continued to impress and was 2-for-4 with a triple.
Rhythm Green got the start on the mound and threw two innings, with Lyle McKinnon, Brandon Romero and Preston Daniels each also seeing some time in relief.
The Giants will back in action when they face Legacy Baseball in tournament play on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
The Eagles, meanwhile, got off to a quick start and won 17-4 in the night game at Belotti Field.
