The young Wild Cactus Baseball players closed out their summer season with a bang on Sunday, sweeping a pair of games from the Southern Humboldt Patriots.
The team, which is made mostly of eighth and ninth grade players, won game one 11-9 and took game two 11-1 in five innings.
Young pitchers Teyler Bailey and Kaiwi Sharp both impressed on their way to the victories.
Bailey, an eighth-grader, threw 4.2 innings in relief in game one and allowed just two runs while striking out six.
He took the mound after the Patriots had scored eight runs in the top of the first.
According to his head coach Matt Tomlin, the young Bailey “pitched brilliant” on his way to the win.
He also had the game-winning two-RBI base hit to break a late 9-9 tie.
Teammate Brody Gaser also was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while McKinleyville Little League All-Star Casanova Marshall impressed his coach with a great defensive play and also had an RBI hit going up against some high school opposition.
Sharp, meanwhile, pitched a complete game for the win in game two, giving up one run and striking out nine.
The speedy Wild Cactus players stole 17 bases in the win, while Eel River Little League All-Star Trae Florvilus had a big game, finishing with an RBI base hit and also making his presence felt on defense.
The doubleheader closes out the summer season for the young Wild Cactus players.
The club will field a 19U team for this week’s Humboldt Eagles tournament which gets under way on Thursday.
We’ll have more on the tournament and a full schedule of games on Tuesday.
