The Humboldt Crabs got their first Pacific Empire League road wins over the weekend, bouncing back from a series-opening loss at the Medford Rogues to win back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday.
The Crabs won 9-7 on Saturday and followed that with a 14-2 win in Sunday’s rubber match.
The Crabs racked up 17 hits in Sunday’s win, including a first home run of the summer for Keoni Coloma, who had five RBIs.
They quickly took control of the game with eight runs in the opening two innings and would add four more in the fifth to lead 12-1.
Jett Ruby and Michael Mckernan each had three hits in the win, including a double by Ruby and two by Mckernan.
Jehee Lee also had a double for the hard-hitting Crabs, as did Victor Castaneda and Antonio Avila.
Nolan Long got the win on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing just one earned run on two hits and four walks, while striking out four.
Eureka’s Hayden Bode pitched two innings in relief and gave up one run on three hits and struck out one.
Saturday’s game was a lot closer and a back-and-forth affair, with the momentum shifting hands multiple times.
The Crabs, however, scored four decisive runs in the top of the eighth inning to over-turn a late one-run deficit and they would add two more in the ninth on the way to the victory.
Ruby provided the offensive highlight of the day for the visitors with his first home run of the season.
Ruby, who also had a double, finished 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs to cap a big weekend for the Fresno native.
Billy Ham and Colin Callahan each also had two hits in the win, including a double by Callahan.
Mckernan added his third double of the weekend.
Cameron Saso got the start on the hill and pitched three innings for a no-decision.
The former McKinleyville Panther allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks and struck out one.
Relief pitcher Blake Ignaciak pitched the final three innings for the win, allowing no earned runs on three hits and a walk and striking out three.
The Crabs won the game despite committing six errors.
With the win, the Crabs improved to 18-11 on the summer.
The Crabs will return to the Arcata Ball Park for a two-game midweek series against the Alameda Anchors, which gets under way one Tuesday night.
