A good summer for the McKinleyville Junior All-Stars continued on Sunday at the Section tournament, although the games are getting closer.
After a dominating 17-0 win over Quincy in their tournament opener at Hiller Park on Saturday, the Mack All-Stars made it two-for-two in the Section tournament with a hard-fought 6-5 win over South Siskiyou in eight innings on Sunday.
The win sets up a championship showdown for McKinleyville on Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m.
A victory in that game will secure the Section title for the District 26 champs, whereas a loss would see them play again on Wednesday night in a winner-takes-all showdown.
Sunday’s loss was the first in tournament play for South Siskiyou, which will try to bounce back in an elimination game against Quincy on Monday evening at 5:30 p.m.
Jake Brunner, who is enjoying an outstanding tournament and got the win on the mound against Quincy, opened the scoring for McKinleyville on Sunday.
The young standout reached base on a fielder’s choice and would score minutes later on a wild pitch after stealing his way to third.
The tournament hosts, however, were held scoreless for the following two innings and found themselves facing a three-run deficit
Errors began to hurt the visitors In the fourth inning and a walk to Tate Saso would load the bases for McKinleyville, before Cabella Carper reached base on an error and scored two runs in the process.
Saso followed that by reaching home plate on a groundout to tie the game at 4-4.
And the young standout was just warming up.
The score remained the same until the seventh, when both teams would add one run to their tally.
But Saso and the McKinleyville All-Stars would have the final say in the top of the eighth, when he led off with a solo home run to right center field for what would prove to be the winning run.
For good measure, Saso then retired the Siskiyou batters in order in the bottom of the eighth to earn the victory on the mound.
With the win, the McKinleyville All-Stars improved to 6-0 on the summer.
