By Ray Hamill — Senior Sequoia Ashby and junior Isabella Claussen led the way on Saturday as the Eureka Loggers cruised to a dominating team victory at the 2024 H-DNL track and field championships.

Competing in wet conditions at McKinleyville High School, the two standout Loggers were among the most impressive performers of the day as the Eureka girls racked up a remarkable 201 points on the way to the team win, which was more than 100 more than any other team.

Arcata was second with 98 points followed by Fortuna (72) and Del Norte (66).

Ashby won three events, including the 1600 meters in a time of 5 minutes 44.55 seconds and the 3200m in a time of 12:17.62.

She also teamed with fellow Loggers Miriam Mende, Summer Morales and Claire Gast to place first in the 4×800 relay.

The standout senior was named co-track athlete of the meet, along with St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus, who also won three events.

Claussen, meanwhile, was named co-field athlete of the meet along with Del Norte’s Lily Sherman.

The Eureka junior won the shot put with a throw of 33’ 10” and was second to St. Bernard’s Madelyn Shanahan in the discus.

“We don’t have that many girls on the team (23), but all of them helped the team,” Eureka head coach Scott Pesch said. “It was kind of a team effort.”

Florvilus also had an outstanding day with victories in both hurdles races and the high jump.

The multi-sport star comfortably beat the field in the hurdles finals, winning the 100m hurdles in a time of 16.02 seconds and taking the 300m hurdles in a time of 47.96.

She won the high jump with a jump of 5’ 3” and would round out a very good day by also placing second in the 4x100m relay race.

There were two other multiple winners on the day, both of whom are freshmen.

Eureka speedster Elizabeth Rominger placed first in the 200m in a time of 27.28 seconds and also was first across the line in the 400m in a time of 1:00.8, as well as teaming with Evelyn Ladika, Emily Pesch and Grecia Ortiz to place first in the 4x100m relay.

Arcata freshman Bella DeCarli won the 800m with a PR time of 2:29.74 and teamed with fellow Tigers Quincy Collins, Nicole Nozawa and Ada Kinziger to place first in the 4x400m relay.

Shanahan won the discus with a PR of 121’ 9” in her final H-DNL event, while Fortuna sprinter Allie Cox took first in the 100m in a time of 13.24.

It was a photo finish in the sprint, with Cox closing strong for the win and edging Eureka’s Ladika and teammate Maya Brightman, who were just .15 of a second back.

Rounding out the day’s winners, Arcata’s Mayleah Jackson won the pole vault (9’ 0”), Del Norte’s Sherman won the triple jump (33’ 6”) and Eureka’s Victoria Ricca won the long jump (16’ 0”).

Eureka’s Emily Pesch and Arcata’s Quincy Collins tied for second in the high jump.

The top league athletes will now turn their attention to next weekend’s North Coast Section meets.
