The H-DNL boys golf season will come down to the final two rounds of action.
Eureka’s Talon Vigil and St. Bernard’s Jack Kramer are tied atop the standings after Vigil posted a season-best round of 70 at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course on Thursday.
Vigil closed what had been a four-stroke gap at the top with the best round of any golfer in league this year to set up a mouthwatering conclusion to the 2024 campaign.
Kramer had the second best round of the day with a 74 to leave both league frontrunners 20 strokes clear of the chasing pack heading into the business end of the season.
Eureka’s Julian Goodman had the next best round of the day with a 77, followed by Arcata’s Mason Alway (80), Eureka’s Jerome Lyons (81) and Fortuna’s Lucas Butler (82).
Four different schools were represented in the top six, showcasing the competitive nature of this year’s league.
The host Loggers comfortably took the team win on the day and appear to be growing stronger as the season progresses.
The Eureka boys have won all four rounds of league play so far and enjoyed their biggest winning margin of the season with a 19-stroke win on Thursday.
The Arcata Tigers have placed second in each round and trail the Loggers by 31 strokes in the team season standings.
Fortuna, McKinleyville and St. Bernard’s rounded out the top five teams on Thursday.
There were several impressive individual rounds on the day.
In addition to Vigil, Goodman and Lyons, Eureka’s Andrew Stewart impressed with an 85, while four different Tigers also shot 86 or better.
Joaquin Ponce and Zayne Morris-Slattery both shot an 83 for Arcata, while teammate Lucas Wembley shot an 86.
Del Norte’s Kai Russell and Blake Larson each also impressed with rounds of 83, while Fortuna’s Dawson McWhorter also had a good day on his way to shooting an 85.
St. Bernard’s Carson Johnson (83), and McKinleyville’s Jake Gardner (86) and Carter Reeves (89) each also broke 90.
Braeden Rice led Ferndale with a round of 106, while Riley Baldy led Hoopa with a round of 121.
Alway and Gardner are now tied for third in the individual season standings, with Ponce, Goodman and Stewart rounding out the top seven, which represent the all-league positions.
However, Wemberley is just one stroke further back, while Russell, Morris-Slattery and Lyons are all within four strokes of the final all-league spot, which should make for an exciting finish to the league season.
The final two rounds of league competition will both take place at Baywood Golf and Country Club in Arcata, with the next round set for April 22.
