The Northern Humboldt Steelheads 10Us were one of three club teams to win a tournament championship at the weekend WCP Arizona Spring Training tournament.
The youngest of the three teams won all five games in tournament play, including an 8-5 victory over Seattle Select in Sunday’s championship showdown.
And they won with contributions from throughout the lineup.
“It was the first time we played complete baseball,” head coach Nate Combs said. “The whole team, from top to bottom.”
Crew Hicks was named tournament MVP after playing catcher for all five games and hitting the ball hard all weekend.
The Steelheads quickly took control of the championship game with a strong start.
On the very first pitch of the game, Reece Combs hit the ball to deep right center for an inside-the-park home run, with Hicks then singling to reach base and scoring moments later on a stand-up triple by Treyce Conley.
Casanova Marshall would drive in Conley later in the inning.
Marshall and Conley both finished the game with a pair of hits, while Tatum Brock, Kaydee Carper and 9-year-old Jacob Carper each also had a base hit in the win.
Cooper Jones capped a great team performance by hitting an inside-the-park home run to close out the scoring later in the game.
Marshall, Combs and Jacob Carper split time on the mound.
The championship win capped a big weekend at the plate for the young Steelheads, who outscored their five opponents 61-12 and out-hit them 59-18.
“Every kid on our team was fantastic and contributed in all phases of the game,” Nate Combs said.

Brock got the start on the mound in the semifinal and turned in another dominating performance, according to his coach, while keeping the Precision Baseball Club off balance all day in a 13-2 victory.
Asher Kapko, Gavin Smith and Maverick Utt helped get the offense going with some big hits early in the game.
“Our offense and pitching was incredible all week,” said Nate Combs, who added “the back end (of the lineup) just lit it up for us.”
Assistant coaches Quentin Carper and Adam Kapko also played key roles in the championship, as did bat boy Enzo Arredondo.
The Steelheads 11Us and 13Us each also won their brackets at the tournament.
