By Ray Hamill — The H-DNL has been rewarded for an outstanding season with all nine varsity girls basketball teams qualifying for the North Coast Section postseason.

Six of the nine boys teams also have been included in the playoff brackets, which were announced early Sunday afternoon.

The opening round games will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday night, with three doubleheaders scheduled for Humboldt County.

Of the 15 H-DNL teams to make the postseason 12 will open at home.

The highest-seeded local team is the St. Bernard’s girls, who received the No. 1 seed as expected in Division 5 and will open at home against No. 16 Credo on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

That game will be played as part of a doubleheader with the SB boys, who received the No. 3 seed in Division 5 and will host No. 14 Marin Academy on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

There will also be playoff doubleheaders at Arcata and McKinleyville on Wednesday night.

Both Arcata teams received the No. 4 seeds in the Division-4 brackets.

The girls will play No. 13 Ygnacio Valley at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys and No. 13 Middletown at 7 p.m.

Both McKinleyville teams, meanwhile received the No. 5 seeds in the same bracket.

The Mack boys, who were co-Big 5 champs with Arcata, will open against No. 12 Eureka at 7 p.m., which is one of two all-local matchups in the first round.

The Mack girls will get the night’s action started at 5:30 when they host No. 12 Branson.

Also in the Division-4 girls bracket, Del Norte received the No. 7 seed and will host No. 10 Fortuna on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Fresh off a Dick Niclai championship over the weekend, the Eureka girls received the No. 3 seed in Division 3 and will have an opening-round bye.

The Loggers will host the winner of No. 6 Pinole Valley and No. 11 Vallejo on Friday night.

The South Fork boys also have an opening-round bye in Division 6 and will play either No. 7 Round Valley or No. 10 Making Waves on Saturday.

Aaiden Burris and the St. Bernard’s boys will open the NCS playoffs as part of a doubleheader with the SB girls.

Rounding out the local boys playoff contingent is Fortuna, which received the No. 6 seed in Division 4 and will host No. 11 Terra Linda on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Ferndale, Hoopa and South Fork girls also are included in the playoff brackets.

Ferndale is seeded No. 8 in Division 5 and will host Marin Academy on Tuesday at 7 p.m., while the Warriors and Cubs will open on the road.

The Hoopa girls are seeded No. 7 in Division 5 and will play at No. 10 Head-Royce on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

The Warriors will travel despite being the higher seed because Head-Royce is a league champion.

The South Fork girls are seeded No. 9 in Division 6 and will open at No. 8 Calistoga on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

There could be three all-local playoff games next weekend.

If the Arcata boys win their game on Wednesday they will play either Mack or Eureka in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

If the Arcata and Mack girls both win on Wednesday, they would also meet in a quarterfinal on Saturday.

In Division 5, if the St. Bernard’s and Ferndale girls both win their opening games they would play in a quarterfinal at St. Bernard’s on Friday night.

  1. Based only on Ray’s seasonal coverage of basketball,

I believe SB ladies have best % odds to go furthest, win section, Nor-Cal, then State.

I believe EHS is likely a semi-finalist in section, must battle to eek out victory to get to section final and Nor-Cal tourney.
EHS section opponents are tough late on the section process.

I believe there could be 6 of 9 local teams in the ladies playoffs that get to section semis.
