Eagles set up championship rematch against Fairfield

The Humboldt Eagles 19Us are finding ways to win close games at an opportune time.

On Saturday afternoon, the Eagles got the better of All Pro by a score of 3-2 to go to 3-1 at the Fairfield tournament and advance to Sunday’s championship game.

It was the second one-run win for the local American Legion club in tournament play, which is a nice turnaround for a team that has suffered four one-run losses this year.

“I’m pleased,” manager Scott St. John said. “We were losing a lot of these one-run games earlier in the year, and we’ve played two one-run games here and have been on the right side of them.”

Lyle McKinnon pitched five innings for the win, while Michael Manzi continued to thrive in the closer role and posted his second save at the tournament.

McKinnon gave up five hits and six walks, but allowed just two earned runs while striking out two.

Manzi threw one scoreless inning in relief to close out the game and struck out one.

“He’s been lights out in that closer role,” St. John said of the recent St. Bernard’s graduate.

After racking up four hits in a win over the Sacramento Samurai on Friday, Garrett Levitt continued to make his presence felt on Saturday and finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

The Eagles started fast and scored all three of their runs in the first two innings to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Jake Brunner (1-for-1 with a run), Ryder Mitchell (1-for-2 with an RBI) and Joe Tanno (1-for-3 with an RBI) each also had a base hit against All Pro.

The Eagles will play the Fairfield Expos in Sunday’s championship game, as they look to avenge a 10-2 loss to them on Friday.
