College of the Redwoods men off to their best start since 1988

The Corsairs are off to their best start in baseball in 36 years.

After sweeping a three-game series at De Anza over the weekend, all by a single run, the College of the Redwoods men improved to 7-0.

The Corsairs won two games on Friday, both by identical 6-5 scores, and followed that with a 2-1 victory on Saturday.

And several former H-DNL players played key roles in the weekend sweep, including McKinleyville graduate Riley Bates, who got the win on the mound in the series finale.

Bates threw six innings, allowing just one run on five hits and three walks, and he struck out nine.

Cam Witte threw one scoreless inning for the save.

Former Eureka Loggers Parker Rodgers and Seth Grammer both also were instrumental in the win.

Granner finished 2-for-3 with a run, while Rodgers was 1-for-4 with a double.

Dante Strazzullo also was 2-for-4 in the win.

The Corsairs combined for 18 hits in Friday’s doubleheaders sweep.

Witte finished 2-for-2 with three walks and three runs in the series opener, while another former Eureka Logger, Richard Reeves, finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Grammer added a triple and two RBIs, while Oscar Rudman was 1-for-2 with two runs and Jose Cardenas was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

The CR bats accounted for 11 hits in Friday’s second game and scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Strazzullo, Gavyn Dansby and Blake Browning each had multiple hits in the win, while Rudman hit a solo home run.

Strazzullu finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, Dansby was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Browning was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Rodgers added a triple and an RBI and Grammer was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Alta Huntsman pitched the opening five innings for the win on the mound, allowing two earned runs on one hit and two walks, with Logan Malinowski threw one scoreless inning for the save.

The Corsairs will try to keep their fast start going when they open conference with a three-game series at Shasta this weekend, beginning with a single game on Friday at 2 p.m.
