ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Local All-Stars enjoy big week

By Ray Hamill — It was a big week for a trio of talented youth baseball standouts, who continue to set a high standard in District 26.

Teoh Arredondo, Breyden Brock and Colton Hawkes have enjoyed plenty of success on the Humboldt County Little League fields over the past six years, capping a remarkable run with a sixth straight District 26 championship this week.

And that makes them our choice for Humboldt Sports Athletes of the Week.

All three standouts were front and center again this week, leading the McKinleyville Junior All-Stars to a District title with three straight wins in tournament play at Fortuna, including a come-from-behind 13-5 win over Eel River in Tuesday’s championship game.

All three players have earned the respect of the McKinleyville Little League community and their opponents over the past few years, starring in the 10-year-old, 11-year-old and 12-year-old tournaments during that time before moving up the Junior division.

But they’re not done yet.

Remarkably, all three have also advanced to the state tournament in each of the previous five years they have played together as All-Stars.

And they’ll be hoping to continue that impressive run when they travel with their teammates for the upcoming Section tournament, which will take place at Shasta Lake and begins on Thursday.

This week’s team of the week, meanwhile, goes to a District Little League team.

The Redwood Empire 11s also captured the county title this week with a dominating run through tournament play at McKinleyville.

Manager Bob Manchin and his players won the championship with a 3-0 win over Eel River on Tuesday night, which qualified them for the upcoming Section tournament.

The RELL All-Stars did not give up any runs on their march to the championship and won all three of their games by a combined 29-0.

The championship-winning roster includes Derick Blackwell, Jace Johnson, Jameson Tyson, Dean Rasmussen, Beckston Fisher, Chayce McGinnis, Dominic Robinette, Bentley Palmer, Joseph Bessette, Wyatt Kortsen, Dawson Morgan and Rocco Pearson.

The players have jelled quickly this summer and came out ready out to go for the postseason, taking care of business with an opening victory over Southern Humboldt and back-to-back wins over rival Eel River on the way to securing the championship.

“It’s a really good squad,” Manchin said. “The kids have been working hard at practice and putting in the extra effort. They all get along great and they’re coming along well as a team.”

Hopefully, the young All-Stars can keep that going next week as they represent the District at the Section tournament.
