A pair of former Hoopa Warriors got their collegiate careers off to an impressive start in softball over the weekend.
Beth Masten and Nae-rew Martin both hit successfully in each of their first two games for College of the Redwoods, although the Corsairs lost both games.
Playing at Folsom Lake on Saturday, the CR women dropped the opener 6-2 and fell 11-2 in the second game in five innings.
It wasn’t all bad news for the Corsairs, however, with some of the new players getting their college careers off to a good start.
Including the hard-hitting Martin, who was 2-for-3 with a double in the opener and followed that with a triple and an RBI in game two.
Martin enjoyed a standout career for the powerhouse Hoopa Warriors and started in the middle infield in both of Saturday’s games, playing second base in the opener and shortstop in game two.
Her former Hoopa teammate Masten also started well.
Masten was the designated player in the opener and finished 2-for-3 with a run in the opener, before switching to catcher in game two and going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Corsairs had 16 hits on the day.
Sophomore Allie Egbert, a 2022 McKinleyville High graduate, also had a hit in each game, including a double and an RBI in the opener.
The 0-2 Corsairs will be back in action at West Valley on Saturday.
