LITTLE 4 ROUNDUP — Dyer, Burris join the 1,000 career points club

It was a memorable night for St. Bernard’s basketball in more ways than one.

A 67-43 victory at Ferndale not only saw the Crusaders cap a perfect run through the Little 4, but the night also saw senior Aaiden Burris reach the 1,000 career points milestone after teammate Seth Dyer achieved score his 1,000th point in a recent game against South Fork.

The win was also the SB boys’ 14th straight and the No. 1 seeds for the Dick Niclai tournament will carry plenty of momentum into next week’s postseason tourney.

Also in action on Friday night, the South Fork Cubs beat Hoopa 76-66 on their senior night in Miranda.

The losses for Ferndale and Hoopa leaves both teams tied for third in the final conference standings and sets up a Dick Niclai play-in between the two schools at Ferndale High on Monday night at 6 p.m.

Dyer and Burris both had big nights in the win.

Dyer finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Burris, who was playing his old school, added 15 points and six boards.

Dyer now has 1,146 career points.

“Our coaching staff is proud of our boys,” said SB coach Pat Shanahan, who added of Dyer and Burris, “It’s a credit to their commitment to this sport and effort they have put in, especially in the offseason to improve their skills.”

Liam Dyer also continued to shine and added 12 points and six rebounds, while Garrett Shanahan finished with 10 rebounds and four points.

St. Bernard’s Zach Bowen added six points and Adam Wagner had eight rebounds.

“It’s always a battle playing at Ferndale,” said Pat Shanahan, whose team closed out conference with a perfect 6-0 record and improved to 20-2 overall. “It’s just an awesome competitive environment full of challenges to overcome.

“(Ferndale) coach Graham Westfall had his team well prepared and they played hard until the last buzzer.”

All of the St. Bernard’s players scored in the win.

The Wildcats, meanwhile, closed out conference play 1-5 and are 5-11 overall.

“It was a tough loss tonight against St. Bernard’s,” Westfall said. “I credit (coaches) Issac Gildea and Pat Shanahan for having their team prepared and ready to play tonight. They came with a well thought out game plan and their players responded well.”

There were some bright spots for the Cats, including the play of sophomore standout Tanner Pidgeon, who continues to shine and scored a team-high 12 points.

“Tanner Pidgeon was once again instrumental on both sides of the court,” Westfall said. “The kid plays with 100 percent effort 100 percent of the time. He always has a great attitude and I am proud of how well he helped our team tonight.”

Ayden Christainsen and Omar Amador “brought amazing energy off the bench in the second half,” according to the coach.

Amador finished with seven points and ignited the home crowd with his play, while Wes Renner and Isaac Kasso “were locked in” on the boards.

Renner finished with six rebounds and teammate Jarret Smith showed great hustle and added five points.

Junior Henry Westfall also had a good game rebounding and with his shot blocking, while Braeden Rice did a “great job taking control of the offense and taking control of the ball,” according to his coach.

“I’m very proud of how well we played as a team in the second half,” the coach added. “We’re looking forward to our home game Monday night versus Hoopa.”

At Miranda, meanwhile, senior Tommy Rotbergs had another big game for the home team, which closed out conference play 4-2 and improved to 18-7 on the season.

“It was a good old-fashioned shootout,” South Fork head coach Taylor Morrow said. 

Rotbergs, who also recently scored his 1,000th career point, finished with a game-high 36 points, including 18 in the first quarter.

The senior standout had six 3-pointers.

Shevy Bero-Van Meter also continued to impress and added 16 points, including four 3s, while Justin Freitas finished with 10 points.

“It was another great senior night with all seniors getting a bucket,” Morrow said of the class that includes Rotbergs, Bero-Van Mater, Freitas, Broc Contreras, Brock Fowler, Jace Sotelo, Ruben Lopez and Cameron Washington.

The Warriors battled back from a 25-point deficit to make a game of it late and were led by Lyle McKinnon and Brian Richards, who each scored 17 points.

“Hoopa did a great job clawing back,” Morrow said. 

Neil Moon added 13 points for the visitors, while Sequoia Valentine finished with nine points and and Brandon Romero chipped in eight points.

The Warriors closed out conference play 1-5 and are 6-12 overall.
