GIRLS BASKETBALL — Warriors, Huskies win tournaments; Loggers keep rolling

The Hoopa Warriors took home a tournament championship for the second straight weekend after beating Mendocino 81-47 in the final of the Gene Cotter Memorial Tournament at South Fork on Saturday.

The red-hot Warriors stretched their winning streak to six straight with the win and have now won seven of their last eight games to go to 7-3 on the season.

The Fortuna girls were also crowned tournament champions on Saturday, beating Mt. Shasta 70-24 in the final of the Lady Trojan Classic at Orland.

Also on Saturday, the Del Norte girls lost to Weed 51-43 in the decider at the Central Valley tournament, while the McKinleyville Panthers fell 57-43 to Foothill in the final of the Livermore tournament.

At the Monterey Trail tournament, the Arcata girls beat Argonaut 66-45 to close out tournament play 2-1 and go to 7-2 on the season.

The South Fork girls beat Point Arena 52-40 to place third at their own Gene Cotter Memorial Tournament in Miranda, while Ferndale beat Clear Lake 41-17 to close out the Stokes Tournament in Kelseyville.

The Eureka girls, meanwhile, played at the third annual Game Recognize Classic at Merritt College, which is a series of games without a tournament champion, beating Division-1 McNair 75-41.

The Loggers, who also beat Cordova out of Sacramento 58-17 on Friday, stretched their winning streak to nine straight and are now 11-1 on the season.

Samara Gaither continued her impressive recent form with a team-high 20 points on Saturday and was named to the all-tournament team.

Kaitlin Giacone added 15 points in Saturday’s win, while Isis Poteet finished with 14.

The McKinleyville girls, meanwhile, fell to a good Foothill team in the Livermore tournament final and dropped to 5-5 on the season.

The Panthers closed out tournament 2-1.

Gabby Watson paced the Mack offense with 12 points, while teammate Tatum Fisher finished with eight points and Bella Tuner had seven points.

Turner helped set the early tone for the Panthers with five points in the opening quarter.

Taly Turner added six points and Liz Mengel finished with five points.

The Foothill Falcons improved to 10-1.

At Kelseyville, meanwhile, the Ferndale Wildcats dropped their tournament opener against Cloverdale on Thursday night by a score of 52-42, before bouncing back to beat Lower Lake 52-29 on Friday, and they closed out tournament play with a big win over Clear Lake.

Michaela Ellsmore was named to the all-tournament team for the Cats after hitting 10 3-pointers in the three games.

The standout sophomore had 24 points in Friday’s win despite playing just three quarters.

The Wildcats are now 6-3.
