Playing shorthanded didn’t slow the Huskies down too much on Saturday.
The Fortuna girls continued their fast start to the new basketball season with their third tournament win in three days at the Orland Lady Trojan Classic.
The Huskies defeated Mt. Shasta 70-24 in the final, and they did it with just eight players on hand because of some early-season injuries.
“I’m super proud of the girls,” head coach Tom Chapman said. “They played together very well this weekend.”
Senior standout Allie Cox scored 13 points in Saturday’s win and was named tournament MVP.
“Allie always plays hard every single possession on both ends of the floor,” Chapman added. “She is our quiet team leader that never stops.”
Teammates Kalie Chittenden and Mariah Bravo each also were named to the all-tournament team.
Chittenden scored 11 points in the final, while Bravo finished with seven points.
Jorlynn Villalvazo also had a good game and scored 13 points, as the high-flying Huskies improved to 9-3 on the season.
Fortuna outscored its three tournament opponents by an average of 37 points, and all eight players scored on Saturday.
Next up, the Huskies play at Ferndale on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
