Gritty Corsairs find a way to beat the Eagles in tournament play

With a performance that head coach Ryan Bisio described as gritty, the College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team overcame a resilient Mendocino team for a second win in two days at the Coach Treggs Classic on Friday night.

The Corsairs won the game 76-71 and improved to 6-5, moving above .500 for the first time this season.

“A real gritty win tonight for our guys,” Bisio said. “I could sense we hadn’t fully recovered physically from (Thursday’s game against Southwestern Oregon) but we dug deep and willed it through.

“Proud of our resiliency tonight to play through some rough patches.”

The game was tied 34-34 at halftime and was a back-and-forth affair throughout the second half.

“Give Mendocino credit,” Bisio said. “They competed hard and made timely shots.”

Jett Cheong scored a team-high 18 points in the win, while teammate Ty Neff also was influential and finished with 16 points.

“Ty Neff made some big plays on both sides of the ball coming down the stretch,” his coach said.

Trey Neff added 14 points and Kai Purcell finished with 13 points.

Former McKinleyville Panther Cody Whitmer also made an impact with a couple of big 3-pointers in the first half, which “gave us a real jolt and helped us find our footing,” according to Bisio.

The Corsairs hit 11 3-pointers in the win.

CR will continue tournament play against a Napa team that is 0-8 on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
