Jacks fall to the Seawolves in CCAA tourney opener

The Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball returned to the postseason for the first time in four years on Thursday afternoon, competing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament.

The Lumberjacks fell to Sonoma State 73-57.

It was a tight game at halftime, with the Seawolves leading by just one point at the interval.

The second half, however, belonged to the No. 5 seed Sonoma State men, who outscored Humboldt 44-27 in the period to secure the win and advance to Friday’s semifinals.

The Jacks were seeded No. 4 for the six-team conference tournament, which is being hosted by Stanislaus State for the first time.

Humboldt and Sonoma State tied for fourth in the regular season conference standings with identical 11-11 records.

Brandon Porter led the way for the Jacks with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Former Arcata College of the Redwoods standout Thomas Nelson played eight minutes for the Jacks and finished with four rebounds.

The Jacks close out the season with a record fo 13-16.
