The Crusaders bowed out of the North Coast Section playoffs on Friday night after falling 68-43 to the top seed and defending section champion Urban in San Francisco.
The St. Bernard’s boys matched the home team for much of the first half, but Urban quickly began to pull away after that and put some distance between the two teams.
It was the first playoff loss for the Crusaders in three years, a run of eight straight games that included a run all the way to the NorCal state championship last season.
And this year’s senior class — Owen Shanahan, Tyler Dimmick, Jack Stark, Seth Brunton and Carl Nunes — will be missed after all their success with the program.
“Thank you to my seniors,” head coach Issac Gildea said after the loss. “Thank you for giving our fans and Humboldt and Del Norte counties the gift of basketball.”
Dimmick closed out his high school career with a bang and scored a team-high 14 points in the loss, while junior teammate Aaiden Burris finished with 12 points.
Shanahan, one of the best players in the H-DN this season, added seven points, as did Seth Dyer.
With the loss, the Crusaders closed out the season 15-12, which included a road playoff win at John Swett on Wednesday.
Afterwards, Gildea expressed his gratitude to the school and fans.
“I am lucky to be the coach for St. Bernard’s High School,” he said. “Looking forward to get to work for next season. Good luck to all the local teams still in the hunt for a championship.”
