Perseverance pays off for Corsairs with walk-off win

Submitted photo – CR catcher Ashley Ballew tags out a runner at home plate after Allie Egbert threw from center field during one of the games over the weekend.

The College of the Redwoods softball team played four games against four different teams over the weekend and finished 1-3, including playing two one-run games.

The Corsairs opened against Modesto at West Valley on Friday and fell 9-8, before losing to West Valley 4-0.

On Saturday, the CR women began the day with a 7-0 loss at San Jose, before bouncing back to beat Reedley 12-11 on a walk-off, also at San Jose.

“We had some hiccups this weekend with errors and base running errors, but we will work hard on that this week to just keep getting better,” head coach Megan Valente said. “This team is working hard and I really watched them grow this weekend from being down every game and never giving up.

“It’s fun to compete with good teams from the south and play seven competitive innings. We will keep working hard and the wins will come.”

Kyla Pontoni provided the offensive highlight in game one with a home run, while Francesca Hart was 3-for-4 and Caitlin Caughie and Brooke Faraimo each finished with a pair of hits.

Fairimo had a double, as did Sadie Hampton, Renee Metz and Ashley Ballew.

Hampton had the team’s only hit against West Valley, and had one of the Corsairs’ two hits in game one on Saturday, along with Caughie.

“Sadie has really stepped it up at the plate this year and is so fast and smart on the bases she make things happen for us,” Valente said of the former Eureka Logger, who also is the team’s starting shortstop and hit successfully in all four weekend games.

The sophomore continued to play a pivotal role in Saturday’s second game, finishing 4-for-5 with a triple, a double and three runs, including a shot to the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh to score two runs and seal the walk-off win.

McKinleyville’s Allie Egbert also had a big game at the plate and finished 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs, while Fortuna’s Metz was 2-for-3 with two runs.

“Renee Metz also impressed me this weekend with getting base hits at crucial times, and going from catcher to second base mid game when we switched pitchers,” the head coach said.

Maddy Farley also had a key RBI double to spark the late rally, as CR battled back from an 11-7 deficit with five unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

“(Farley) came off the bench and came up huge for us,” Valente said of the Del Norte player.

Kylee Dewey got the win in the circle in relief, her second on the season.

“Our win against Reedley took all of our team,” Valente said.

The CR women are now 3-3 on the season and will play a doubleheader at Solano on Friday.
