The Crusaders won their North Coast Section basketball playoff opener on the road on Tuesday night, defeating John Swett 70-67 in a hard-fought matchup in the East Bay.
The win for the No. 9 seeds sets up a quarterfinal showdown at No. 1 Urban in San Francisco on Friday night.
The Crusaders had to battle all the way for the win, as the home team rallied in the fourth quarter to make for a tight finish.
Aaiden Burris and Seth Dyer each scored a game-high 22 points in the win, including a pair of 3-pointers by Burris.
Owen Shanahan returned to the lineup after missing a few games down the stretch of the regular season because of injury and finished with nine points.
Tyler Dimmick and Wyatt Simoni each chipped in six points, while Liam Dyer had five points.
The Crusaders trailed by two after the opening quarter but began to find their rhythm in the second period, opening up a seven-point lead before heading into the break ahead by two.
They continued to play well offensively in the third quarter and stretched the advantage to 10 heading into the fourth.
The home team and No. 8 seeds, however, refused to go down easily and battled back late to push the Crusaders all the way.
“We did everything we could, we just missed some free throws down the stretch and they made some 3s,” St. Bernard’s head coach Issac Gildea said. “But you’ve got to be happy with a win in the playoffs.”
Seth Dyer and Burris both were instrumental in the victory, as was the return of Shanahan, who played through the injury and had an impact.
“Seth Dyer’s just really consistent,” Gildea said. “And Burris is just an explosive offensive player. And Owen played phenomenal. It was a good team win. I thought we did a good job executing tonight.”
The win lifts the St. Bernard’s boys to 15-11 on the season, while the Warriors close out their season 16-12.
The Urban Blues rolled to a comfortable win in their opener, defeating Clear Lake 67-43.
Friday night’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
