The Corsairs overcame some mental mistakes on offense on the way to pulling out a hard-fought 65-62 win over visiting Butte College in men’s basketball at College of the Redwoods on Saturday afternoon.
The win lifts the high-flying CR men to 2-0 in the Golden Valley Conference (18-2 overall) and keeps them in a tie with Lassen atop the standings.
The game was close throughout, with CR’s Ty Neff going on a late 8-0 run to help break the deadlock and give the home team a lift at an opportune time.
“He really provided a spark and a jolt for us,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said of Neff, who hit two 3-pointers late in the shot clock in that run, including one from very deep.
Neff would finish with 13 points, while his twin brother Trey added 14 points.
Jon Nchekwube scored a team-high 18 points in the win.
For much of the game, however, the CR men struggled to find much of a rhythm, offensively.
“They really put pressure on us today and I really thought that made us short circuit mentally and play very uncharacteristically on the offensive end,” Bisio said.
The Corsairs, however, found a way to win the game late, with Ty Neff’s big run giving them a lead they would not relinquish.
“It tested our resolve and it tested our character, and those proved out today,” the head coach said.
Next up, the CR men play at Feather River on Thursday and at Lassen on Saturday in a showdown that could be for the conference lead.
The CR women, meanwhile, also played Butte on Saturday and lost 79-44.
The Corsairs dropped to 1-1 in the GVC and 6-13 overall.
The Butte women, who came into the game ranked No. 4 in the state, improved 1-1 and 16-3.
