Miller makes weight after taking on last-minute title fight

By Ray Hamill — Eureka’s Tyson Miller made weight on Thursday for his title fight at the Urijah Faber A1 Combat 7 fight night.

The Eureka pro will face off against the experienced Ozzie Alverez in a 170-pound showdown on Friday, as he tries to extend his unbeaten start to his pro carer.

Miller, who fights out of the Institute of Combat gym in Arcata, is 4-0 and mostly recently defeated Emmanueli Adzoh in July of last year.

He has ended three of his four pro fights in the opening round.

“He’s fighting a really tough experienced fighter,” one of Miller’s trainers, Cass Bell, said. “He’s been around for a while.”

Alvarez has been in the pro ranks since 2010 and is 9-9, and Miller, who accepted the fight just two weeks ago, is preparing for a grind.

“Our game plan is always to train for a hard, hard fight and 15 minutes,” Bell said. “That’s what we train for, and if it goes shorter than that then that’s awesome.”

Bell added, however, he would not be surprised to see Miller end the fight before that.

“I have a feeling he’ll knock him out,” Bell said. “He’s been hitting really good with his hands.”

Bell also announced recently that he will return to the cage on March 10.

The 35-year-old Arcata fighter most recently defeated Jared Scoggins with a split decision in Connecticut last month.

He is 6-2 in the pro ranks and will fight Josh Hill (21-5) in San Jose.
