Crusaders beat the Warriors to win Mt. Shasta tournament

An outstanding start to the new girls basketball season continued for St. Bernard’s on Saturday, as the Crusaders won a second tournament in eight days with a second different MVP.

Last week it was junior Madelyn Shanahan who was named MVP after the SB girls cruised to a Cloverdale tournament championship, and on Saturday it was sophomore Laila Florvilus who was named MVP after they won the Mt. Shasta Holiday Classics.

The Crusaders defeated a familiar foe in the decider, getting the better of Del Norte 39-31.

“It was a tough, physical well-played basketball game by two good H-DNL teams,” SB head coach Matt Tomlin said. “I am so proud of my our ladies for staying together and winning with a complete team effort.”

Florvilus, who has begun the new season on fire, continued to impress on Saturday, scoring eight points to cap three strong days in tournament play.

The outstanding Shanahan also continues to play a major role for the team and finished with a game-high 21 points in the win on her way to being named to the all-tournament team.

Aimayah Her also made the all-tournament team after an impressive showing the past few days.

The high-flying Crusaders improved to 6-0 on the young season.

The Warriors, meanwhile, have also impressed early in the season and came into the big showdown with a record of 5-1.

It didn’t help that they were missing two key starters for the game due to sickness.

“We played tough,” head coach Justin Clifton said.

Jacalyn Gorbet scored a team-high 10 points in the loss, while Brooklyn Carter finished with nine points, Anyessa Bettga eight and Koy-Poh McQuillen five.

Next up, the Warriors play at Gold Beach on Tuesday, while the Crusaders will play at the McKinleyville tournament, opening against the host school on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
