GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP — H-DNL teams to face off in championship game

A pair of H-DNL teams will play each other for the Mt. Shasta tournament championship on Saturday.

On Friday, the St. Bernard’s girls won their second straight in tournament play and fifth straight to start the season, getting the better of Mt. Shasta 43-24.

Earlier in the day, the Del Norte Warriors also improved to 2-0 in tournament play with a comfortable 58-23 win over Weed.

Laila Florvilus continued her impressive start to the new season for the Crusaders, who also won the Cloverdale tournament last weekend.

The standout sophomore finished with a game-high 26 points to lead the SB girls into the championship game.

Madelyn Shanahan also had a big game and finished with 10 points in Friday’s win.

St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin knows his team will be in for a battle against what he described as a “very good Del Norte Warriors team.”

Del Norte and St. Bernard’s are now a combined 10-1 on the season.

The Crusaders have won all five of their games by double digits.

Saturday’s big showdown tips off at noon.

Also in action late Friday night, the Eureka girls lost 36-27 to San Marin at the Maria Carrillo tournament.

The loss drops the Loggers to 6-2 on the season and 1-1 in tournament play.

Del Norte 58, Weed 23

Senior Lily Wilson had a big day defensively on Friday afternoon, as the Del Norte girls won their second straight game at the Mt. Shasta tournament.

Wilson held Weed standout Renaissance Johnson to just two points in the first half, and the Warriors quickly took control of the game.

“Lily Wilson had the best game I’ve ever seen her play,” Del Norte head coach Justin Clifton said.

Anyessa Bettega led the Warriors offensively with a game-high 21 points, while Wilson finished with 12 points.

“We played really well,” Clifton said. “We played great defense.”

Lili Nunez added nine points in the win, as the Warriors improved to 5-1 on the new season, while Jacalyn Gorbet finished with seven points, Carter Brooklyn chipped in five points and Kimora McCovey four.

McKinleyville 48, Fortuna 38

One day after dropping their tournament opener against Ukiah, the McKinleyville girls turned in a better performance on the way to beating Big 5 rival Fortuna for the second time in eight days on Friday.

There was little to separate the two teams for the first half, with the Panthers holding a slender three-point advantage going into the break.

But the Mack girls stretched their advantage with a 14-7 third quarter and were able to hold on after that.

“We played well,” head coach Jacob Cheek said. “It took us a while to get going, but I think we’re getting back to what we were doing well.”

Junior Bella Turner continues to give her team a big spark off the bench and was instrumental in Friday’s win.

Turner scored a game-high 17 points in the win, including 10 in the fourth quarter.

Tatum Fisher added eight points in the win, while teammate Morgan Stubbs finished with seven.

Grace Scilacci scored a team-high 15 points for the Huskies, who dropped to 2-5.

Allie Cox also had six points for Fortuna.

The Panthers improved to 4-1 and will have a tough test in their tournament finale against Middletown on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Ferndale 50, Redwood Christian 31

Ferndale 52, Fort Bragg 36

The Wildcats won back-to-back games at the Trinity Holiday Classic on Thursday and Friday to advance to Saturday’s championship game against the host school.

Emily Chavez led the way offensively against Redwood Christian and finished with 14 points, while Kyla Albee and Reaghan Langer each added 10 points and Carly Carmesin had nine.

The consistent Chavez was top scorer once against Fort Bragg with 17 points, while Albee finished with 15 points.

The Cats had to battle for both wins, but pulled away in the second half in each.

“Both teams we played were tough and physical,” Ferndale head coach Terra Albee said, adding “I feel like our defense has really stepped up this weekend, especially against Redding Christian.

“We are clicking as a team, which landed us in the championship game.”

Langer added nine points against Fort Bragg, while Carmesin chipped in four points, Tia Henrikson had three and Clara Albee and Clara Christiansen each had two.
