The Arcata Tigers comfortably advanced to the semifinals of their own tournament on Thursday after getting the better of Buckingham Charter 74-18.
Also at the Arcata tournament, McKinleyville overcame a poor shooting performance to beat Enterprise 45-39, while Eureka lost to Piner 75-67 to drop to 1-3 on the season.
At the Mt. Shasta tournament, meanwhile, the St. Bernard’s boys improved to 4-0 on the season with a 77-31 win over Dunsmuir, while the Del Norte boys suffered a fifth straight loss, falling 56-30 to Reno.
The Hoopa Warriors also were in action on Thursday, falling 88-68 to University Prep.
The victory for the Tigers was their fourth in five games this season
“We played well,” Arcata head coach Kellen Maynard said. “Buckingham is a young team, they’re smaller than us and a little bit more inexperienced, but they fought pretty hard in the second quarter.”
Luke Moxon led the way offensively in the win and finished with 16 points, while Dawson Vallerga had 11 points and Kalani Butor had 10.
“Our defense kind of set the tone,” Maynard said. “We didn’t let them get into a rhythm.”
The Tigers will continue tournament play at 8 p.m. on Friday.
St. Bernard’s 77, Dunsmuir 31
The Crusaders hit 15 3-pointers on the way to a comfortable win over Dunsmuir on the opening day at the Mt. Shasta tournament on Thursday.
The win was the fourth straight to open the season for the St. Bernard’s boys.
Liam Dyer led the way offensively and finished with a game-high 19 points, including five 3s, while Seth Dyer added 17 points, including three 3s.

Aaiden Burris, who is one of this week’s Humboldt Sports Athletes of the Week, also continued to impress and finished with 13 points, including a pair of 3s, while Wyatt Simoni had nine points and Owen Shanahan eight.
Both Simoni and Shanahan each had a pair of 3-pointers.
The Crusaders continue tourney play with two games on Friday.
They play Del Norte at 10:30 a.m. and Weed at 7 p.m., and head coach Issac Gildea is expecting a much tougher test for his players in both games.
Piner 75, Eureka 67
The Loggers dropped to 1-3 on the season with an eight-point loss to the Prospectors.
Hans Chalmers had a big night offensively in the loss and finished with 28 points.
Teammate Jahmil Rippey also continued to impress and finished with 19 points.
The Loggers will try to bounce back when the play Enterprise at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
University Prep 88, Hoopa 68
The Warriors fell to the University Prep Panthers on the opening day at the Trinity Holiday Classic on Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore Brandon Romero continued his impressive start to the new season with a team-best 20 points in the loss, while teammate Brendan Baldy added 15 points.
Brian Gulley also made some noise and finished with 11 points, while Kenick Turner chipped in eight points and Lane Campbell five.
With the loss, the Warriors dropped to 0-5.
They will continue tournament play on Friday morning when they take on Modoc (1-4) at 9 a.m.
Grants Pass 66, Del Norte 35
The Warriors faced a tough challenge on Tuesday night with a trip to play a strong Grants Pass team that is favorite to win a tough Southern Oregon league this year.
Ethan Thomas maintain this fast start to thew new season with a team-high 17 points, while sophomore Lyon Rigden moved up to varsity after his clutch performance for the JVs last weekend and chipped in five points.
“Our defense had moments of success, but we have to put a complete game together,” head coach Cris Rice said.
“We just need to continue to learn with each game. We have to play harder than the other team or we are in trouble.”
On Thursday, the Warriors opened the Mt. Shasta tournament with a 56-30 loss to a fast and athletic Reno team.
Thomas scored a team-high nine points for the Warriors, while Kai Russell finished with eight points and Rigden chipped in five points.
