GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP — Crusaders, Warriors keep rolling at Mt. Shasta

The St. Bernard’s Crusader won their fourth straight game to start the season with a 45-36 win over Weed on the opening day at the Mt. Shasta tournament on Thursday.

Also in action at Mt. Shasta, the Del Norte girls improved to 4-1 on the season with a dominating 64-11 win over the host school.

Elsewhere on Thursday, the McKinleyville Panthers suffered their first loss of the season at the Healdsburg tournament.

The Panthers fell to Ukiah by a score of 62-51.

Also at the Healdsburg tournament, the Arcata girls quickly got back to winning ways after last weekend’s loss to McKinleyville.

The Tigers opened tournament play with a 45-39 victory over Middletown.

The Crusaders, meanwhile, kept their fast start to the new season going with a six-point win over Weed in a hard-fought opener at the Mt. Shasta tournament.

In a battle of unbeaten teams, it was the St. Bernard’s girls who prevailed and improved to 4-0, while Weed dropped to 4-1.

Madelyn Shanahan and Laila Florvilus led the team offensively with 11 points apiece, while Aliyah Vigil, Alyssa Boham and Mataya Sherman each finished with seven points.

The Crusaders continue tourney play against the host school at 4 p.m. on Friday and will close out on Saturday against Del Norte.

Ukiah 62, McKinleyville 51

The Panthers suffered their first loss of the season at the Healdsburg tournament, setting up a second early-season showdown against Fortuna on Friday afternoon.

A much-improved Ukiah team from last year was able to keep the Panthers at bay throughout.

“Every time we made a run, they responded,” McKinleyville head coach Jacob Cheek said. “We got out-rebounded.”

Bella Turner led a balanced offensive performance for the Panthers with 12 points, as 11 of their 13 players scored.

Kalyssa Claros added six points while Camryn Pinard, Gabby Watson and Kim Lewis each finished with five points.

The loss drops the Panthers to 3-1 on the season and sets up an early rematch against Fortuna at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

The Panthers got the better of the Huskies 66-43 at the Arcata tournament last week.

The Huskies opened the Healdsburg tournament on Wednesday night, falling 62-45 to Justin-Siena.

Del Norte 64, Mt. Shasta 11

Jacalyn Gorbet scored a game-high 24 points as the Del Norte girls cruised to a comfortable win on the opening day at the Mt. Shasta tournament.

The always reliable Lili Nunez also had a good game in the victory and finished with 14 points, while Lily Wilson added 10 points and Anyessa Bettega had eight points.

The Warriors will play Weed on Friday at 1 p.m. and will close out the tournament against St. Bernard’s on Saturday.
