By Ray Hamill — The local high school basketball tournament season gets under way this week, with several varsity teams in action.
Two high school tournaments will take place here in Humboldt County, one hosted by the Arcata girls and one hosted by the McKinleyville boys.
The Tigers tourney opened on Wednesday night, with four local teams — Hoopa, McKinleyville, Fortuna and Arcata — scheduled to play a round robin format over three days.
The tournament continues on Thursday, with Arcata and Hoopa playing at 6 p.m. and Fortuna and McKinleyville at 7:30.
Also in girls action this week, the Eureka Loggers will take a 3-0 record into the Grants Pass tournament, which opens on Thursday, while the St. Bernard’s Crusaders will play at the Cloverdale tournament, which also begins on Thursday.
The South Fork girls are also scheduled to host Potter Valley on Friday evening in a non-tournament game after opening the season with a 67-33 loss against Fortuna on Tuesday.
In boys action, meanwhile, Eureka, Arcata and Hoopa will join the host Panthers at the Mack tournament, along with four out-of-area teams.
The action tips off on Thursday, with four games scheduled — Arcata and Cardinal Newman at 4 p.m., Eureka and Lincoln at 5:30, McKinleyville and San Lorenzo at 7 and Hoopa and Eagle Point at 8:30.
The St. Bernard’s Crusaders will tip off their season at the Upper Lake tournament, when they take on Maxwell on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Fresh off a season-opening loss at Del Norte on Tuesday, the Ferndale Wildcats will play at the weekend Point Arena tournament, while Fortuna will travel to the Wheatland tournament and South Fork will play at the McArthur tournament, opening against Modoc on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Rounding out a busy week for the H-DNL teams, the 1-0 Del Norte Warriors will play at the Yreka tournament, opening against Weed on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
