Busy weekend in store for College of the Redwoods sports

By Ray Hamill — Corsairs fans will have plenty of options this weekend.

Beginning on Thursday, it will be a busy three days of action for College of the Redwoods sports, as the local community college looks to continue what has been a very successful calendar year.

The highlight of the weekend will be on Saturday afternoon, when the Redwoods football team hosts Monterey Peninsula in the Grizzly Bowl at Cal Poly Humboldt’s Redwood Bowl.

This will be CR’s first bowl game since 2009 and the first time they’ve hosted a bowl game since 1995.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Also in action this week, the Redwoods men’s and women’s basketball teams will both feature in tournaments.

The men will host their annual Coach Treggs Classic on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The Corsairs will play two games in the tournament, opening against Sierra on Thursday at 7 p.m. and facing off against Mendocino on Friday, also at 7.

The CR men are off to an impressive 10-1 start this year and are ranked No. 14 in the state.

The tournament will feature six teams, also including Napa, Shasta and Southwest Oregon, with seven games taking place over the three days.

Games will be played at 5 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, at 3, 5 and 7 p.m. on Friday, and at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The CR women, meanwhile, will play at the Shasta tournament, opening against San Mateo on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Corsairs, who are 2-5, will also play Consumnes River on Friday at 2 p.m. and Monterey Peninsula on Saturday at 11 a.m.
