The Fortuna girls overcame a slow start to beat Eureka in Big 5 volleyball on Tuesday night, winning 25-18, 25-17, 25-15.
Several players had impressive performances for the Huskies, who improved to 2-0 in conference play, including junior Kylee Fennell, who had a good all-around night with five aces, five kills and five digs.
Lily Larue also had a good night and was a force at the net, finishing with six kills and four blocks.
“We started out a little bit slow,” said Fortuna head coach Rob Hayes, who suggested that might have had something to with the 90-degree weather in Fortuna on Tuesday. “But like a steamroller, we got going and kept getting better and better and better.”
Libby Johnston also had a good night, finishing with five aces, four digs and three kills, while junior Courtney Wilson stepped up her game and had an impact with seven digs.
“She did a fantastic job for us,” Hayes said of Wilson.
Grace Scilacci had a big night serving, finishing with nine aces, to go with four digs and three kills.
For the Loggers, who were playing their conference opener, junior Mariah Napoleon continued to impress despite the loss.
Celebrating her birthday, Napoleon finished with a team-high seven kills, while teammate Maeghan Hampton added five kills.
“We struggled with our passing,” head coach Stephanie Napoleon said.
Anisha Rechelluul had some phenomenal saves and “continues to play with a lot of heart,” according to her coach.
