Eagles 17Us bounce back from opening loss in Fairfield

The Humboldt Eagles remained in the hunt at their American Legion end-of-season baseball tournament in Fairfield on Thursday, avoiding elimination with a hard-fought 12-11 over Rodeo.

Cooper Ohlsen pitched three innings for the win on the mound, with Tyler Schlesiger and Mateo Gutierrez both throwing well in relief.

At the plate, both Mike Jewell and Matt Letter finished 2-for-3 and each reached base five times, scoring three runs apiece.

Gutierrez, who got the save, also had a big game at the plate, finishing 2-for-3, while Seth Grammer went 3-for-4 with a double.

Archie Clayborn also was instrumental in the victory, scoring three of the Eagles’ runs.

The Eagles will continue play at the double-elimination tournament on Friday at 1 p.m.

Wednesday’s Game

The Eagles dropped their opening game at the tournament on Wednesday, falling 6-1 to Fairfield.

Archie Clayborn led the way at the plate, finishing with a double, while teammate Cooper Ohlsen added a base hit and an RBI.

Michael Jewell also had a base hit and scored the team’s only run.

Matt Letter pitched four innings in the loss, with Alex Jimenez pitching the final three.
