The Northern Humboldt Giants opened their end-of-season tournament in Fairfield on a winning note on Wednesday, defeating Rodeo 12-1 in six innings.
Austin Brown led the way at the plate for the red-hot Giants, who are now 31-4-1, finishing 3-for-4 with a triple, while teammate Will Mager added a pair of hits.
Three pitchers combined on the mound, with Ethan Thomas getting the win.
Thomas got the start and threw three innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out three.
Jason DeShaun and Vincent Agliolo both pitched well in relief.
Jared Dixon also had an impact at the plate, adding a triple, while Wilson Medina had a base hit after being called up from the Northern Humboldt Knights for this week’s big tournament.
Agliolo, DeShaun, Finn McRae and Ty Ghisetti each also had a hit.
The Giants will play again on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Eagles drop tourney opener
The Humboldt Eagles were also in action at the tournament on Wednesday night, dropping their opener 6-1 to Fairfield.
Archie Clayborn led the way at the plate, finishing with a double, while teammate Cooper Ohlsen added a base hit and an RBI.
Michael Jewell also had a base hit and scored the team’s only run.
Matt Letter pitched four innings in the loss, with Alex Jimenez pitching the final three.
The Eagles responded on Thursday morning with a hard-fought 12-11 victory over Rodeo.
They will play again on Friday at 1 p.m.
