The Northern Humboldt Giants took advantage of some solid pitching and plenty of offense on Saturday, as they swept a doubleheader from the Redding Vipers in American Legion baseball in Redding.
The 17U Giants won the opener 7-4 and took the nightcap 20-0 in four innings.
“I thought that the pitchers did a great job as far as getting ahead,” head coach Troy Ghisetti said. “Our hitting, in the first game we were a little slow getting started, but in the second we pounded the ball. Hopefully we can carry that over into tomorrow.”
In game one, Brody Mattz got the win on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits in 5.2 innings, while striking out six.
Vincent Agliolo pitched the final 1.1 innings, striking out three and allowing one hit.
Agliolo also led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Mattz, Jared Dixon, Jason DeShaun, Austin Brown, Cole Blackburn and Isaac Arriola each also had a hit.
In game two, Finn McRea and Brown combined for a no-hitter, tossing two hitless innings each against the overmatched Vipers.
DeShaun had a huge game at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with a triple and a double, while Dixon had three hits, including a triple and two doubles.
Agliolo and Brown capped big days at the plate with two more hits each, including a triple by Brown, while Mattz also had a triple.
McRea, Ethan Thomas and Chet Keasey rounded out a 15-hit team performance.
The 3-0 Giants wrap up a busy opening weekend with another doubleheader on Sunday.
