File photo – The Hoopa Warriors got their first win of the season on Friday night.

The Hoopa Warriors decided to switch some players around for Friday night’s football showdown against the Fortuna Killer B’s and it paid immediate dividends in a 13-8 victory.

After losing their season opener to South Fork a week ago, head coach Floyd “Cowboy” Billings and his staff took a look at some options and decide to make some changes.

“We switched everything up and we executed better than we did against South Fork,”Billings said. “We had a lot of beef on our line tonight, and the whole line, they were spectacular.”

In first half, the Warriors ran up and down the field almost at will against the younger Huskies, with Andrew Hunsucker, Larry Tracy and Jason Marshall all having an impact.

Hunsucker, whom the coach described as “a Warrior tonight,” and Marshall each ran for over 100 yards and both scored a TD.

In the second half, it was the Hoopa defense that stepped, shutting down the Huskies offense.

For Fortuna, Matt Letter finished with 101 yards rushing on 17 carries — 80 of them in the first half — while quarterback Colton Corning completed 7-of-19 passes for 122 yards, including a  66-yard TD pass to tight end Sam Anderson.

It was senior night for two Hoopa players — Tracy at running back and Sly Logan along the lines — and both players had a big say in the win.

“It was a good win for our seniors,” Billings said. “They both executed. I’m very proud of the boys.”

With the win, the Warriors improved to 1-1, while the Killer B’s are now 0-3.
